how to clean a nee doh

A Nee Doh goes sticky because skin oils and dust bond to the soft outer skin — not because it's worn out. Five minutes of washing, drying and powdering brings back the matte squish. Here's the routine, plus the three things that permanently ruin a squish ball.

the five-step routine

  1. Lift the fluff. Sticky tape or a lint roller — never a fingernail.
  2. Hand wash. Lukewarm water, one drop of mild dish soap, gentle fingertips.
  3. Rinse clean. Any soap film left behind re-attracts dust within a day.
  4. Dry fully. Pat, then air dry out of the sun. Damp squish stays tacky.
  5. Powder. A pinch of cornstarch, rolled between your palms. Matte again.

three things that ruin a squish ball

  • Soaking or machine washing — water trapped in the seam never leaves.
  • Alcohol, sanitiser or solvents — they dry the skin out until it cracks.
  • Direct sun and radiators — heat thins the skin permanently and is the main reason squishies split.

cleaning questions

How do you clean a Nee Doh?
Wash it in lukewarm water with a drop of mild dish soap, rub gently with your fingers, rinse, then pat and air dry completely. Once bone dry, dust it with a pinch of cornstarch and roll it in your hands to restore the matte finish.
How do you fix a sticky Nee Doh?
Sticky means dust and skin oils have bonded to the surface. Soap wash, full dry, then cornstarch or baby powder. Repeat once if it is still tacky — do not use alcohol or solvents, which dry out and crack the skin.
Can you put a Nee Doh in water or the washing machine?
A quick hand wash is fine. Soaking and machine washing are not — water works into the seam, stays trapped, and the squish goes permanently tacky or splits.
How do you get lint and hair off a squish ball?
Press a piece of sticky tape onto the surface and lift, or roll a lint roller over it, then wash and powder as above. Picking at embedded fluff with a nail is what starts most tears.
How do you fix a hole in a Nee Doh ball?
A pinhole can be sealed with a dab of clear silicone on a clean, dry surface, but the repair rarely survives squeezing. Once the skin is open, retire it rather than risk the filling leaking.
Can you wash a Nee Doh in the washing machine?
No. A machine cycle forces water under the skin and stretches the seam, which is what leaves it permanently tacky or split. Hand-wipe only.
How do you clean squishy toys in general?
Gel and rubber squishies: damp cloth, a drop of mild soap, dry fully. Slow-rise foam: wipe only, never soak. Plush squishies: mesh bag, cold gentle cycle, air dry.
What do I use if I have no cornstarch?
Baby powder or a fine talc-free powder works the same way. Dust lightly, roll it in your hands, then wipe off the excess so it does not cake in the mould lines.
