how slow rise foam actually works

The core is an open-cell polyurethane foam — the same family as memory foam mattresses. Squeezing it pushes air out through the open cells; releasing lets air seep slowly back in, and the skin keeps that process gradual. Density and temperature set the speed, which is why the same dumpling squishy rises faster on a warm desk than in a cold car. A mochi squishy uses a closed gel core instead, so it cannot be slow-rise by design.

reviving a squishy that stopped rising

Take it out of any bag or box and leave it uncompressed for 24 hours at room temperature — most recover on their own. Warming it between your palms for a minute speeds it up. Do not microwave, do not soak, and do not try to inflate it. If the skin has torn, air escapes as fast as it enters and no amount of resting will fix it; that squish is done. What is a slow rise squishy?
A slow-rise squishy is made from an open-cell memory foam under a soft skin. Squash it flat and it takes anywhere from two to ten seconds to puff back to its original shape — the slow recovery is the whole point, and it is what separates slow-rise from an instant snap-back squish.
Which squishies are slow rise?
Dumplings and buns, butter sticks, bread and toast moulds, and most large food characters. Mochi and gel-filled balls are not slow-rise — they snap back instantly. A Nee Doh is a third thing again: a dough-core resistance squish that holds its shape until you push it.
Why is my slow rise squishy not rising?
Almost always cold or compression. Foam stiffens below about 15°C, and a squish stored crushed at the bottom of a bag takes days to recover. Warm it in your hands, leave it uncompressed overnight, and the rise usually comes back. If the skin has split, air escapes and it will not recover.
How slow should a slow rise squishy be?
Two to ten seconds is the normal range. Under two seconds and the foam is dense or cold; over about fifteen and the squish is usually oversized rather than better. The slowest rise in our range is the larger dumpling and butter moulds.
Are slow rise squishies scented?
Some are lightly scented from the manufacturing process rather than deliberately perfumed. We do not add scent, and any faint smell fades within a couple of weeks of normal handling.
